How To Protect My Mobile Device Of Spy Software

Watch Dogs is an upcoming AAA title game by Ubisoft in which the protagonist is a hacker who can hack any aspect of the interconnected society in the near future. This premise isn’t that far-fetched, as hacking someone’s smartphone or installing spy software is possible even today. With this in mind, I decided to draw some attention to the issue. You are not absolutely safe. At any given moment, there might be people listening on your phone calls or stealing your data and considering the fact that our phones are getting ever more involved in our day-to-day existence, I think it’s important to know how to defend yourself.

Spy software is by far the most common method used to monitor, track and steal data from mobile devices. It can get into your device in many ways – via file transfer, through a message or even from a downloads. This isn’t to say that you’re definitely being monitored right now, but it definitely is a possibility you need to be aware of. The good news is that most spyware applications tend to make your phone behave in a certain peculiar manner – it may start to suddenly stutter, shut down unexpectedly or freeze, and even though there might be another explanation for these particular symptoms, never rule spyware out. If you have your suspicions, here’s how you can remove it.

Factory Reset

This is basically nuking your phone. Just like when your computer gets infected, the surest way to deal with the problem is formatting the hard drive, performing a factory reset on your phone will essentially do the same. It will return the software back to the condition it was in when you first bought it. It’s quite an extreme solution, but it’s by far the surest way you can go about resolving the problem. If you don’t feel confident enough that you can do this without permanently damaging your phone, bring it to your closest supplier and request a factory reset. They will be able to do it right.

Keep in mind that this means that all your data will be lost! Your phone’s software is going to be just the way it was when you first got it out of the box. So before doing this, make sure you create a backup.

OS Update

A less dramatic solution would be to update your operating system. This solutions works because spyware is programmed to target certain files in the software. By updating it, you are essentially changing those files, which means that most spyware won’t be able to work anymore. Keep in mind that this is not 100% solution. Some more sophisticated spyware apps are going to be able to keep up with the update. Still, it will remove your more popular spy software pieces, which should be good enough. You need to be really unlucky if you’ve been infected by something that system update doesn’t remove. In that case, you can always perform a factory reset, just to be sure.

Removing spyware when you’ve already been infected is one thing, but making sure that doesn’t happen again is another thing altogether. Your phone’s security can work on different layers. Your first line of defense is the password. Make sure that you don’t use something like 1234 or something easy to crack. Second line of defense would be a password app. It’s a piece of software a bit more sophisticated than your native password and will lock your phone on another level. Dealing with passwords might be annoying, but it’s better to do it than being spied on. Finally, you can install security apps (essentially antivirus for smartphones) to identify and block those pesky spyware. I hope this article has been helpful. Good luck.
