History and development
Windows Phone is a well known concept developed by Microsoft. Its predecessor, Windows Mobile was anoperating system developed for pocket PCs in year 2000. Its first operating system was pocket PC 2000. It was codenamed “Rapier”. After that Microsoft developed several operating systems for smart phones and pocket PCs. These had many similarities to each other. The last of this series was Windows Mobile 6.5. This was released in year 2009 at the world mobile congress.
Windows Phone 7
Then Microsoft needed to create something user friendly. As a result of their hard working they were able to announce Windows Phone 7 on February 15, 2010. But it was officially released after 9 months on November 8, 2010. Then in May 2011 they released an updated version named Windows Phone 7.5 which is also called Mango. This updated version had new features like internet explorer 9, Windows Live SkyDrive and Twitter access. In 2012 another update named Tango was released. Then in 2013 Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7.8. It was a combination of Windows Phone 7 and 8. Some features of it, like updated start screen and lock screen wallpaper were from Windows Phone 8. However Windows Phone 7.8 is not upgradable due to its hardware issues. The user interface used in Windows Phone 7 is codenamed as “Metro”. Its re-sizable tiled home screen is a very popular user friendly feature which also inspired Windows Phone 8 live tiles. Each tile has a link to an application or a function. Windows Phone 7 has a virtual keyboard which can be used on- screen. It has features like spellings check, emoticons, word prediction and similar words. To find a similar word the user has to tap the typed word. Then it shows a list of words which are similar to the typed word.
Windows Phone 8
Windows Phone 8 which is also known as Apollo, is the latest version introduced by Microsoft in year 2012. Like its predecessor, Windows Phone 8 is also based on CE architecture. But none of the earlier versions are upgradable to the Windows Phone 8. These phones also come with larger screens and advanced multi core processors. Windows Phone 8 has a unique home page design with re-sizable tiles. The user can pick a size, delete or rearrange each tile according to their priorities. Its primary web browser is Internet Explorer 10 which has many similar improvements like the desktop version. Internet Explorer 10 also supports multi tab facility, multi touch zooming and straight YouTube streaming. Windows Phone 8 is featured with tap + send. It helps to share multimedia files, contacts, and many more with another NFC device just by tapping. The keyboard used in Windows Phone 8 has many useful features. Its sentence prediction and new emoticons have become very popular among the users. Because of multi tasking ability, the user is allowed to switch between applications without closing earlier applications. But only trusted applications will be running even after switching to another application. Any third party application will pause while switching applications and the user will have to resume earlier tasks from its paused state.
